In 2012, I volunteered with the Get Your Bot On Robot Hackathon as an equipment librarian. At the time, I had no knowledge of robotics, but was quickly amazed at how accessible the technology had become. I thought, "If only I'd had this when I was a kid! I would have played with it all the time!"
Fortunately, my position as a children's librarian DID allow me to both play with and share my knowledge of technology. In 2013 I discovered a group of like-minded people at Kwartzlab Makerspace in Kitchener, who also work to promote DIY culture and making. Since then I have toured Cambridge, Waterloo, and Woodstock Public Libraries with Kwartzlab's 3D printer, and helped coordinate and teach a number of STEAM workshops in partnership with other local organizations. As a librarian I now work with all ages to bridge the digital divide, offering programs, seminars and even one on one tutoring on a number of topics.
