While living in Japan, it was a wonderful surprise to encounter this little shrine, dedicated to the spirit of a small freshwater spring, on a thickly wooded mountain. Recently painted and well cared for, the strong red and white colouring and sharp angles created a beautiful contrast to the cool haven of mossy, dewy rock and lush, jungle-like greenery that was its home.
